Alan poked his head into the room, looked both ways. "It'll do."

Stepping back, he smiled expansively. "After you."

Ainsley gave him a curt nod of her head, making her way into her room which was familiar territory by now and she set the bottle down on the floor as she slid off the gold and purple bracelets from the box downstairs. "Now that you've dragged me away from my cheesecake, I hope you're going to prove I made the right choice," she informed him, sitting down on the edge of the bed.

"Morning," Alan replied, propping his head on the heel of his hand and observing her efforts with some bemusement.

"Thank goodness your fictional roommate elected to spend the night elsewhere."

Ainsley turned, enough to just look at him and abandon her hair (far too long now). "My fictional roommate who may or may not be underaged," she corrected him, voice still thick from grogginess. "Besides. We could have taught her grown-up things," she smirked. "Depraved, terrible grown-up things."

"What an unrepublican thing to say," he said, the same grogginess in her voice evident in his smile. Alan stole another glance at Ainsley before flopping onto his back. "I of course mean that as a compliment."

"You must have infected me with your dirty Democratic ways," she protested, shifting a little in the too-small bed. "I knew I'd catch something if I slept with one," she mocked-chastised herself.

"Was I your first, then." With a satisfied smile, Alan closed his eyes and indulged the appealing notion that they were elsewhere--Boston, maybe, or D.C. Somewhere with cars streaming down the streets, somewhere with a business week to set the rhythm of day-to-day existence.

He opened his eyes. "Check with the clinic. Perhaps they've developed a shot."

"No, actually," Ainsley admitted, turning to look at him. "I slept with two Democrats in college. I may have been under the influence of alcohol and there may have been a lack of worthy candidates around."

Alan laughed; the bed was small enough that she likely felt some reverberation of it. "When I was in college and under the influence of alcohol"--he lifted a hand to touch her hair--"sometimes things got so out of hand that I didn't even inquire as to the other person's political affiliation before sleeping with them."

Ainsley shifted mildly to turn into the touch and to face him, accepting that the terms of this allowed for morning-after touching and conversing. "You slut," she accused happily, leaning in to kiss him on the lips, even, fully transferring all Democrat germs onto her own lips.

If asked, Alan would have said that was the key difference between Republicans and Democrats--Democrats were willing to cuddle after they'd screwed you.

"Mmm," he agreed. "Unrepentant."

Ainsley settled, shifting a little to brush her hair out of her face and keep everything at least a little in order. She narrowed her eyes, as if to study him, wondering who this man really was and wondering how much she actually cared. "Unrepentant is just another word for obstinately successful," she informed him.

"Obscenely," Alan corrected. "In this instance, I'd say I've been obscenely successful."

He briefly met her eyes before allowing his gaze to drift to her bare shoulder, her clavicle.

Ainsley just lay there, used to being under scrutiny. This type just involved a lot less clothing. "So were you sullied by my Republican ways in bed?"

"I have this theory," he said, looking up, "that the reason Republicans so vigorously promote the values they do is to draw attention from the fact that they're quite adventurous in the bedroom."

Ainsley was going to take that as a wonderful compliment and say nothing, absolutely nothing in reply to how that could be misconstrued as something ill said about her.

"And Democrats get their verve from...?" she prodded curiously.

This was an excellent attitude to adopt, because even Alan's best compliments tended to be backhanded, underhanded or otherwise suspect. No virtue was without its drawbacks, after all.

"Can't tell you that. Not until you convert."

"Everyone keeps talking about converting," Ainsley grumbled her complaint as she rearranged herself, stroking her fingers up and down his leg. "That'll be when frozen pigs fly."

Her touch tickled; Alan closed his eyes and fended off the urge to laugh. "Stranger things have happened," he cautioned. "Then I'll be left with nothing to tease you about but your height."

Ainsley gave him a sharply unimpressed look. "Five foot three, thank you," she replied proudly. "Which is not even close to a midget's height."

"I have nothing against midgets. Quite the contrary." Recalling Denny's tidings from home (Denny was seeing a midget; Alan was seeing no one in particular), Alan paused to briefly consider and then firmly kiss Ainsley.

Ainsley was only mildly surprised by the kiss, but she adjusted and cupped his cheek, leaning into Alan's body and did what she did as best as she could.

Second best was not even an option.
