The rituals of cooking were something that wasn't lost on Ainsley Hayes. She was good at remembering recipes and traditions and when she said she'd cook, she meant it through and through. Eventually, she'd decided on something simple when it came to the menu, from biscuits like (but not exact) her Nana used to make, a boar-inspired meatloaf, and a berry pie to go with it.

Getting it to Shadow's place was the issue, but she could problem solve. She had once taken a test in the fourth grade that said she problem solved on a higher level than most kids. A basket had done the trick and after she'd put on a wool turtleneck of blue and a pair of jeans, the only thing missing was her thick camel-coat before she made the trek out in the cold.

If nothing else, what it did was keep her from overheating, which was far more important than it sounded. Eventually, she arrived and gave a light knock on the door with her knuckles. "Shadow? Hi, it's me. It's Ainsley Hayes. I'm here for our planned dinner?"

There had been a moment of panic earlier that day, when Shadow hadn't known where he and Ainsley were having dinner. The Compound was always crowded, especially around meal times, and not precisely conducive to dating. So it had to be his place and Shadow felt bad making her trek through the snow, but it wasn't as though there were many other places. Winter is not conducive to picnics.

He was sitting and doing coin tricks to calm the impossible, unreasonable flutter of nerves in his stomach. Shadow had never been good at dating, and now he was out of practice to boot. Despite that, he was looking forward to this.

At the knock, he was up and at the door, coins left on the tabletop. "Hey Ainsley Hayes," he said as he opened it. "Come on in. Here, let me get that basket for you."

Ainsley shifted the basket slightly as she flashed a nervous smile in Shadow's direction as he helped her with all the food and she made sure nothing was too cold with a quick touch of her bare fingertips to the items as she closed the door behind her. "I thought that we might as well avoid the rat race by having dinner here, seeing as I have a roommate and all," she explained, brushing her hair back out of her face while sliding out of her jacket.

"Get a bit crowded in there with all the beds," Shadow agreed with a small smile. Not that this place was all that spacious.

He set the basket down and turned to look at her for a moment, then reached for her coat. "Here, I can put this somewhere for you, if you want."

Ainsley smiled softly as he took her coat and she brushed it lightly, to get stray hairs off of it as she watched him for a moment before setting to work on the basket. "So, I've got basically three courses," she explained, drawing out glasses as well. "And juice. Three courses and juice."

She twisted her hair back to tie in a side-ponytail, drifting down to the length of over half her back. "So, hi," she greeted again, more than nervously as she stood there, her stomach a mess of butterflies catapulting themselves against her stomach lining.

"Three courses? It's like a feast." Suddenly, absurdly, Shadow felt like he should have found a tablecloth to put on the rough-hewn, handmade table here. Three courses in a picnic basket, and this really was a proper date, wasn't it?

He carefully hung her coat up next to his own, then turned back to look at her. Shadow had put on his nice red shirt special for this, for her.

"Hi," he said, looking at her warmly. Facing her, he wasn't nervous anymore. Things had a way of being easy with Ainsley. Simple.

She lightened slightly at that, feeling her nerves shed and fall to the wayside. No one expected anything, no one wanted her to do a little dance or conform to their hoops. She could just be herself with him and that was okay. "It's really not that much," she insisted, taking out the plates and pointing to them one by one. "Biscuits, boar-loaf, pie."

"It didn't take me long," she swore before a comment could be made. She watched her coat for a moment as she smoothed a hand over her sleeve, the material keeping her fingers warm before she slid into a chair and crossed her legs.

"It has been half an age since I've had any biscuits." There had been a little restaurant in Sacramento which had had fantastic biscuits, though how someone who really understood Southern cooking wound up there was a mystery.

"I am sure it's all very good," he said as he reached onto a shelf for a small, cloth bag. It wasn't like wrapping paper was easy to come by, here.

Shadow held it out to her with a quiet smile. "Here. Before our fingers get all sticky with pie."

Inside was a simple, yet lovely sort of necklace (http://www.trailstobridges.com/store/ProdImages/wooden_bead_2_largeth.jpg). Not pearls, but close, maybe.

Ainsley took the bag gently into her hands, weighing it there like a precious resource as she took a peek inside, then stared up at him. Sure, of course he had mentioned he'd finish it, but she'd relegated that whole notion to a dream, just in case she got her hopes up too much. "Well, the biscuits are best I can do here. Obviously, they won't be miraculous," she nattered away while opening the cloth bag gently, unveiling the necklace in her palms.

She stared at it in shock for a long moment before looking up at him. "Shadow, this is beautiful," she praised it quietly, brushing her thumb over the whole of it. "It's really, incredibly..."

She shifted to twist her neck slightly, wanting to put it on. To show her appreciation for a gift so completely thoughtful and beautiful.

The look on her face when she opened it was more than worth the trouble of it all. He'd had started with smaller beads first, more like the ones he had done for Karen. But after seeing her at New Year's, the line of her neck in that dress, Shadow had started over.

And this one, just looking at her, he could tell that this one fit.

"It's pine," he said quietly as he instinctively moved behind her chair to help her with the clasp. Maybe he was overstepping his bounds, but his fingers were warm against her neck as he did it up neatly. "The beads, I mean. Pine."

She craned her neck back to look at him while he helped her to fasten the clasp and she made sure that her always-expanding amount of hair stayed out of the way. "It's beautiful," she insisted again, because in all her time, she hadn't received any kind of gift even remotely this personal or amazing.

She tipped her head forward just slightly at the touch of his warm fingertips, the hair on her forearms standing at attention beneath her sleeves and she bit her lip lightly.

His heart was beating faster when she leaned against him, louder and faster in his ears. Sure, it was all physiological, but it felt like Ainsley reminded him he was alive. Not just space in a room. Alive.

"Suits you then," he said quietly. The beads lay just so on her skin, and Shadow couldn't resist brushing his finger against the smooth skin on the back of her neck. "I'm glad you like it."

Then, because she had cooked and he didn't want to just ignore that, Shadow reluctantly pulled away from her and stepped to the other side of the table. "So, ah, dinner?"

From: [identity profile] playingtheenemy.livejournal.com
Ainsley's breath caught in her throat at the light touch, the tender little wisp of a thing that was such a stranger to her that she didn't even have a name for it at first. "Dinner," she agreed, her voice sounding thin and willowy, still stuck on her breath up there, choking her with sounds that couldn't escape.

She was still idly brushing her fingers over the necklace, as if she didn't want to stop, as if reminding herself of its presence reminded herself of Shadow, who made it for her, who was sitting with her while she poured glasses of grape juice and divided portions out.

She'd consciously made smaller sizes, so her nerves wouldn't get the best of her and she wouldn't make herself look like a fool or a pig or just a piggy fool. "I didn't know what you'd like, so I just sort of stabbed in the dark at what I knew how to make."

He sat down across from her at the table and scooted his chair in closer. Passed out silverware and all, but couldn't help smile as he saw her fingers toying with the necklace.

When he had been making it, his imagination had never got farther than her first putting on the necklace. That had been what he had thinking about as his knife smoothed over the wood, but now she kept wearing it, and it was better than he would have hoped.

"I like all sorts of things," he said as he took the plate. "I am intrigued by the boar loaf."

"We really have a shortage of ground beef," she explained ruefully, with a big grin on her face. Really, she had just gone to town with what they had, never having expected to be in that situation, not really. "It's mostly just sort of a cousin to pork, I think? It's got cheese though and it tasted good when I sampled it before coming here," she promised.

She couldn't stop smiling. Well, that was strange.

She had stopped waiting for the invisible starter gun and had just started, eating the biscuit with her free hand and not picking it apart at all, but just taking whole bites as she eventually had to let go of the necklace to pick up cutlery.

"I trust you completely," Shadow assured her, though he did look over the piece curiously before taking a bite of it. It was better than something called 'boar loaf' had any right to be. "Oh, it is really good."

He took a piece of his biscuit but just smiled for a moment as he watched her eat. Oh, but she had such a gusto when it came to eating. "Where did you learn to cook?"

"From my mother," she admitted. "When I was a teenager and was following so ardently in my Daddy's footsteps of politics and being a young Republican, I owed her something. So I let her enroll me in beauty pageants and I let her teach me to cook, because it was a deal," she said, waving her hand and the biscuit around in the air while she spoke.

"So, I was a young Republican beauty queen who could bake a mean souffle," she said winningly, giving her shoulder a lift as she stabbed into the food with her fork to eat.

He couldn't help but grin at the idea of a teenaged Ainsley, let alone one who was in the sequined dress and a tiara. It was adorable and hilarious all wrapped up in one.

"You're a woman of many talents," Shadow said after he took a bite of his biscuit. "Did you enjoy the pageants and all?"

From: [identity profile] playingtheenemy.livejournal.com
"I actually did," she admitted with a nod, then gave him a worried look. "That's bad, right? If I enjoyed them, it's bad and almost speaks of me being shallow and hung up on a society based on looks?"

Still, she had liked it. She'd gotten up there, gotten to do her routines and speak her mind and look pretty and it paid for quite a bit of her schooling. Her food was getting pushed around, but it was nearly done at this rate.

He rolled his shoulders in a shrug as he speared another bite of his boar loaf. "Not exactly something I'd want to take part in, but there are worse hobbies."

Laura would have the Miss America pageant some years, but mostly that was to make fun of all the dresses. Secretly, though, Shadow had suspected she liked it, despite poking fun at all their talents.

She was finished with her plate long before Shadow was, but she had anticipated that happening and simply went back to playing with her hair and the necklace. "I never did look back after I got into Smith," she admitted. "Once I was enrolled, that was it. No more beauty queen, no more cheerleading, just a direct focus on my work and on politics," she reminisced, index and middle finger brushing the smooth pine of the necklace.

"Then my hobby became debate class and preparing for law school and then," she mock-sighed. "And then the eighteen hour days arrived and my personal life just vanished."

Not to mention, most of her dignity, especially when she decided to work for an opposing government.

He took a drink of his juice and resisted the urge to just sit back and watch her sit there with the firelight flickering on her hair. So he went back to his dinner, but glanced up too look at her probably a bit too often.

"You've led a busy life," said Shadow, and the same could not really be said of him. "What was your talent? In the pageants."

"I danced," she admitted, because she could barely sing and instruments weren't her style and god forbid she ever actually twirl a baton. She made sure her plate was polished good and clean, a lesson she had learned a long time ago about not taking food for granted. "I'm sure it looked much better then. Now it would probably be extremely uncoordinated, seeing as I haven't danced in half a lifetime."

Shadow laughed quietly as he finished his biscuit. "Dancing, huh? I was hoping you would have spun plates on poles or something."

Really, though, just the image of a teenaged Ainsley dancing her heart out on stage was incredibly endearing. In a really funny way, of course.

"Oh, no. No, no, no, see, I'd have retained some dignity if I had," she assured as she smiled broadly again, another instance of her being unable to stop and a loud laugh escaped her mouth before she stifled it back in. "No, I danced. To music and all. I used to be able to do the splits and incredible things that I really only dream about now," she admitted.

"You did pretty good with me on the solstice," Shadow pointed out with a smile as he leaned back in his chair. He looked at her warmly for a moment then asked. "I didn't realize I was dancing with a trained dancer then, or I'd have been much more embarrassed."
