"And I didn't think I'd ever have to worry about making sure a little girl brushed her teeth every day or washed her hair in the shower," Shadow pointed out, but he was smiling fondly as they came up to the hut. Garm, drowsing by the door, leapt up at their approach and padded over, pulling on his rope lead. "But this is the world we live in, I guess."

Ainsley watched the dog with her eyes, still unsure about the animal but willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as she followed along. "She adores you," she said. "Plain and simple and anyone with eyes can see."

At the mention of that, Shadow smiled, beamed was more like it as he reached down to scratch Garm's ears for a few moments. "Feeling's mutual. I think between me and Rollie, we do pretty good with her, considering everything."

After a moment, he straightened up and gave the dog a look. "You mind staying out here a bit longer? Don't think Ainsley wants to get jumped all over just yet."

Ainsley lingered where she could watch Shadow, not wanting to overstep her bounds in any way, especially not when her heart was beating so quick and so nervous as it was.

And really, she was relieved that the dog was staying outside, at least for a little. "Well, little girls just need a firm paternal figure," she said. "In my opinion, but that might be due to my being raised in a patriarchal society."

"Could be, I guess. We just do the best we can, mostly."

He flashed her a quick smile, and his heart was beating faster too. This didn't quite feel the way it had when she had been here before, those times during the snow. There was a bit more purpose to it.

Shadow nodded to the door. "Come on in?"

She nodded, a pleasant smile on her lips as she took him up on his invitation gratefully, stepping her way into his home, which had taken on a familiar sheen in her eyes. "So, did I mention?" Ainsley said, grinning now with mischief. "I was proposed to," she deadpanned, wryly.

His eyebrows went up as he followed her in trying not to show his surprise as he shut the door quietly and turned back to look at her.

"Were you? And did he dramatically sweep you off your feet?"

"I was moved to slap the man, does that count?" she asked, as if genuinely curious. "He'd proposed to about two dozen people," she explained while entering the hut. "Something political liaisons, and let me tell you, I was not happy to discover he shared my political party."

At that, he suppressed a smile, because he could just imagine how she reacted to that. If a tendril of jealousy had curled up in him, well, that was all dissipated now. "Sounds like a real romantic," he observed as he reached out to take the bottle of wine from her.

She let go of the wine, keeping a hold of the Fresca while keeping her way inside. "Not only that, but he's psychotic," she continued on the litany of wrongdoings, rolling her eyes. "He thinks God told him to assassinate the President."

"So should I be expecting an invite to the wedding any day now?" He teased her lightly.

The only cups he had in his hut were mugs, and it felt weird snagging them to drink something like wine out of. But then, they were pretty far from goblets or flutes, so he just shrugged and handed one of them to her.

She didn't sit down just yet, waiting for something as silly and formal as an invitation, but that was just the kind of woman that Ainsley Hayes was. "Only if it's immediately followed by a funeral. That's the only way I could see that going."

He smiled at that and sat on the edge of his bed with a small smile. "Not exactly crazy about the idea of you getting married myself," he said with a small smile as he sat on the edge of his bed.

It took him a moment to realize how that sounded. "Not to anyone who isn't me, anyway."

After another beat, he rushed to clarify, ears starting to heat up. "Not that I'm proposing. I'm just saying, so...yes."

Ainsley wasn't exactly speechless much in her life. In fact, she likely spent ninety-five percent of her life saying far, far too much aloud and not knowing when to stop and it usually took something of great magnitude to make her say nothing at all and Shadow's little word stumble was one of those things.

Her own cheeks flushed a vibrant color of pink as she cleared her throat and nearly attacked her mug of wine, drinking it desperately before swallowing hard and trying to calm herself down. "Well, you can rest easy," she said, when calmness had washed over her enough. "I have no plans of engagement to psychotic assassins or otherwise."

He looked down into his mug, trying to ignore the blush spreading down his neck. That was...absolutely smooth, Shadow. Sometimes he just shouldn't say anything at all.

"That's, ah, glad to hear it, really." He took a sip from his mug then gave her a sheepish smile. "You want to sit down?"

Ainsley nodded, making her way over in a lazy, almost languid walk before sitting on the bed and crossing her denim-clad legs, sipping at her cup. "Besides," she said, a sly grin on her lips. "I am fairly sure he also proposed to about four men and a child."

He turned to look at her, giving her a small grin. "Sounds like a real catch."

Scooting around to face her, Shadow drained the rest of his mug then splashed some more wine into it. "I just don't know if I can offer you the same things he does."

Ainsley grinned at that, holding her mug with both hands while shifting to sit cross-legged on the edge of his bed. "And just what things might those be? Madness? A predilection towards assassination? Although, I suppose our political values do align, if a bit strangely."

"Well, he's obviously got a thing for grand romantic gestures," Shadow teased her, brushing fingertips over his mug to keep himself from touching her knee or her side or the soft skin of her neck. It was like she was full of places where his hand would fit just so. "I mean, I don't know if I can compete with such a casanova."

"You don't even have to," she promised, smiling over the rim of her mug at him. Maybe it was silly to think so optimistically, but after so many weeks spent toying with the notion of what they were doing, she'd come to the conclusion that she liked it.

In fact, she very much liked it, which was saying something. "Besides, I'm sure you've been romanced in your day right back. I'm not exactly brimming with ideas that mark the doings of the great lover himself."

"I guess we're a matched pair then," he told her with a slow smile, just looking at her. Just sitting and taking her in before reaching and stretching to put his mug on the small table. "Good thing we found each other."

"So we can lavish our inadequate romantic ideals on each other instead of subjecting the larger population to them?" she asked with enthusiasm and a coy, teasing note to her voice. "However would we have done anything otherwise?"

"Altogether better this way," he agreed and brushed his hands up to rest on her knees.

It was strange to consider, that if he hadn't seen her in the chaos after Halloween then they wouldn't be here. That something as small as that could lead to this.

She finished her cup with a long and graceful sip, no slurping to be had before she set the item aside and leaned into his touch slightly. Really, she hadn't expected this, not considering her track record and her inability to do anything seriously.

"I agree," she said softly, leaning up to press a kiss to the corner of his lips.

He smiled as she came up to him, tilting his head to hers easily. Eyes closed as a warm hand came up to rest on her neck as he kissed her.

They were away from all the noise and unexpected bounty of the party, but this was a treat of a different sort.

Ainsley had made sure that nothing was on the bed because the very last thing she wanted was to knock something over and permanently stain his coverlets or anything or worse, his clothes. But there was nothing in her way and she slowly, gracefully, untucked her legs for better ease of moving into the kiss.

His hand drifted down to her waist as she moved in against him, slowly pulling her close. There wasn't any hurry, or, if there was, it was low-burning. They'd been at this long enough, no use rushing it as he pressed kiss after kiss against her sweet, rosy mouth.
